| Push lawn mowers are by
far the most common method for cutting grass. There are
two main types of push lawn mower. First is a rotary
blade lawn mower which uses a gas engine or electric
motor to power a spinning blade. The second style is
the reel mower. This style has been around for over
50 years and uses a horizontal shaft with several cutting
blades. Older reel mowers are driven by the wheels
being
turned. However new models are equipped with a rechargeable
electric motor.
In my opinion a reel mower is the better model of push
lawn mower. I believe it is better for the grass since
it uses a shearing action to cut the grass rather then
a chopping motion like a rotary blade mower does. A reel
style mower is also better for the environment since
it doesn't require any fuel to operate.
However, some lawns are either too large or "tough"
for a reel mower to be effective. Then a rotary push
mower is better suited for the job. Rotary lawn mowers
come in both electric and gas models. Unfortunately they
aren't able to operate simply by pushing them like a
reel mower can.
Until this year I have always used a rotary blade mower
for my lawn until this year I tried my neighbors reel
mower. Now I am considering buying one. The reel mower
is quieter and much more maneuverable, and since I have
a small lawn it makes the job easier.
If you have a small lawn or simply want to have a quieter
lawn mower that is better for the environment a reel
mower may be the best option. However if you live in
the country hand have country grass a gas or electric
reel
mower would probably be a better choice.
Whichever style of push lawn mower you choose both will
accomplish what they are designed for. Based on the size
and shape of your lawn and the quality of the grass,
you can choose which push mower is best for you.
